St. Baldrick's - Fight for a Cure 2012

On March 10, 2012, Mike Joyce and John and Trish O’Sullivan sponsored the “Fight for a Cure” fundraising event on the eve of the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The event was held at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park to help raise awareness of the foundation which contributes funding for childhood cancer research.

St. Baldrick’s was started over 12 years ago in March of 2000 and it is one of the largest volunteer-driven fundraising programs in the world. Volunteers shave their heads to show solidarity with the children stricken with this disease. To date St. Baldrick’s has raised over 117 million dollars worldwide.

This event was held in memorial of those in the community whom lost their battle with cancer. This year’s “Honored Angels” where; St. Rita High School student Sean Farrell who died in 2005 and Annie Ryan daughter of former Attorney General Jim Ryan, who died from a brain tumor in 1997.

Over thirty boxers competed for this worthy cause.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis and Cook County Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarborough, former professional football player Napoleon Harris were among those present. Cook County Clerk Dorothy Brown was present to pass out trophies for the youth division winners.

All in all, over 2000 people attended and over 300 people shaved their heads for the cause raising over 50,000 dollars for the foundation.
